A touch of mugwort on indigo-tinged cloth — a scrunchie tie-dyed and hand-sewn by the Buyi people of Guizhou, China.

• Tie-dyed cloth dyed with plant indigo — a Guizhou technique in which indigo-dyed cloth is bound (zharan) to place patterns. The expression of the indigo shading differs from piece to piece
• Filled with mugwort (artemisia) — stuffed with cotton blended with mugwort (per supplier spec). The tradition of mugwort sachets, reshaped into a hair accessory
• Wavy "wood-ear" edge — an edge that ruffles like pleats. A generously sized, fluffy form that flatters gathered hair
• Artisan handwork — the supplier lists the process as machine-sewn handwork. Sewn one by one
